This year, 17 young filmmakers were honoured at Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year awards, which were presented at Limerick’s Omniplex Cinema and Troy Studios and recorded to be broadcast on RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player.
Now in its 28th year, the award ceremony continuously introduces thousands of budding filmmakers to the global stage and encourages more young people to consider a career in filmmaking.
A part of the Fresh International Film Festival, the 2024 edition of the award ceremony allowed more people to watch the show by being broadcast live on RTE2 from 7 to 9 PM on Monday, April 29.
Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards celebrated some of the amazing talent in front of and behind the camera. Here are the winners:
Fiachra Cotter O’Culachain: A Dublin Leaving Cert student, won Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2024 for his short film Ivy. He emerged as the overall winner for his project, which he wrote, directed, and edited. Ivy is a coming-of-age story featuring Hugh, a teenager whose life takes a turn when he meets the new “girl-next- door,” Ivy. It was his third time entering the Young Filmmaker of the Year.
“Fiachra’s award-winning film, Ivy, is a perfect example of short filmmaking. It boasts a compelling story, talented ensemble cast, and impressive cinematography,” said Fresh International Film Festival director Jayne Foley. “Made by teens for teens, it beautifully captures the timeless tale of ‘boy meets girl.’ It’s truly a deserving recipient of the title Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2024.”
Jake Dundon: He came in third place for the “thought-provoking film” Adaptation of the Only Nightmare I’ve Ever Had.
